Understanding Plans & Specs (Part I)

During this two-part webinar, participants will gain a basic understanding of the layout and format of project specifications and drawings. Through interactive tasks, attendees will review and learn to navigate the project documents, including the CSI Master Format of specifications and methods for navigating drawing sheets.

Part 1 (September 14) will focus on the basics of understanding CSI Master Divisions 1 through 33. Participants will complete an exercise specific to reading and understanding the content of an actual project specs and related drawings.

Part 2 (September 21) will dive deeper into understanding and navigating the CSI Master divisions 1 through 33. Participants will complete an exercise specific to reading and understanding the content and multi-discipline requirements of an actual project specs and related drawings.

Learning Objectives:

  • Gain an understanding of CSI Master Format of specifications
  • Learn how to navigate drawing sheets, including the following specifics:
    • Sheet numbering
    • Reading and cross-referencing drawings
    • Cover sheet and project code compliance
    • Plan views, elevations, sections, and details
    • Drawing schedules and diagrams
    • General and specific sheet and discipline notes

Reggie Garcia
President, LATCON

Reggie Garcia is a Sheetmetal worker by trade he has been associated with Local #9 for 38years. He completed a 4 year accredited apprenticeship program as well as a senior board member for the Apprenticeship committee that serves Colorado.

He has also been on several SMACNA committee teams as well as the Team Chair for productivity and new innovations committee.

His background in the industry has been very diverse, He worked for MSSM Company which was a heavy industrial firm. In his 17 years with them he was the superintendent and shop Forman for several high profile projects such as the LC-40 Launch complex at Cape Canaveral in Florida as well as the Space Launch Complex 4 (SLC-4) at Vandenburg Air Force Base in California.

He became Vice President of Vision Mechanical and during his 18years with them he worked with the Owner to build the company from a million dollars in company projects company to a $35,000,000 dollar project company. Several of his highlighted projects with Vision were the Battle Mountain High school as well as the New gas fired $550 million dollar power plant in Pueblo. This project was unique as Reggie assembled a group of contractors that put a bid and won from Black Hills Energy.

He left in 2016 to start a MWBE General contracting / Excavation company with his daughter Brandelynn they have been very busy and started with 3 employees and now are currently at 125 employees. As an MWBE and part of the Mentor Protégé program with Adolfson and Peterson they are proud to ensure a divers work force.

James Martinez
Project Manager, Adolfson & Peterson Construction

Jimmy Martinez is a project manager for Adolfson & Peterson Construction (AP), and has been with the company going on 4 years.

He has an MBA in project management, an undergraduate degree in business administration, and has a certification in management consulting.

He is on the committee for the HCC Aviation Committee that discusses hot topics and happenings at DEN.

He has a background in low-voltage electrical, as well as oil and gas facility construction in the mid-stream and up-stream sectors.

He is on the Tactical Solutions Team (TST) at AP, and has helped TST division grow from $0 in revenue to $50 Million in revenue in 4 short years.
Sean Mendez
Project Manager, Adolfson & Peterson Construction

Sean Mendez is a Project Manager with Adolfson & Peterson Construction (AP). A Trim Carpenter by trade, he has worked in the Construction Industry for 40 years. 30 years in residential, and the last 10 years on the Commercial side. He has a B.A. in Human Performance of Sports Medicine from MSU Denver. For the past 8 years, Sean has been a Committee Member and Instructor, for HCC’s Contractor Academy Education Committee.

High Profile projects in the last 10 years include Garden City HS Kansas, VCSII Charter Communications, DPS Paul Sandoval Campus Expansion, Charter Communications TI, Liberty Industrial Distribution Center, City of Aurora Public Safety Training Center, DPS North HS Historic Renovation, and Holly School District RE-3 PK-12 totaling 1,490,000 sq/ft, and $341,945,000.
